Clueless cellphone user alert

by Brad Brighton, Geek-in-Residence,  February 10, 2005 (You can get the first feedback post!)

Ok, so I was sitting at breakfast at a local restaurant when I noticed a guy several tables away using his cell phone. Now, I could just do the standard rant about how people don't need to be THAT connected -- he was obviously conducting business, and if I wanted to I could have listened in -- but this is about something else.

No, what struck me as ugly even in this situation was that he was using a phone that apparently made him hold it to his ear to listen, then move the phone away, face it, and talk, then move it back to his ear to listen again. No, he wasn't looking at the screen to confirm something, he wasn't just adjusting it. He was, by choice or by necessity, having a half-duplex conversation.

WTF? Get a clue and get a phone that's configured so you can at least not look like you're using a circa 1970's walkie-talkie. And then,... get a clue and not force everyone around you to listen to your conversation. (I was easily 20 feet away.)
