Another media center(re) project

by Brad Brighton, Geek-in-Residence,  February 6, 2005 (You can get the first feedback post!)

iTheater It's not a bad idea, and even if it were, more power to them to try to succeed. After all, sometimes the best ideas don't come in the v1.0 package but take time to mature.

I do have to wonder though about the wisdom of building this from the ground up rather than taking on the job of porting (or even wrapping) one of the existing projects (like MythTV. One big thing I've noticed about many open-source projects like this is that they try to invent (or reinvent) the world in v1. That's somewhat understandable since there's no strict development guidance and there have to be sexy features on the table or few people will volunteer. But... hasn't anyone learned the lesson of the iPod? Do one thing, do it really, really well. Then, if you succeed, start branching out.

Really, a great PVR that has schedules available would be just fine to start. Get that running well, then keep on rolling. I wish them luck with it anyway since I'd like to see a media center app on Mac OS X...
